Practice News Story 3: Crime

Evelyn Braithwait woke up suddenly, she could hear glass breaking in the distance, but just as fast as it came it was gone again. She fell back asleep and thought nothing of the odd noise in the early morning hours. Little did she know that the church building across the street had just been broken into. According to Sheriff deputy Geoffery Hasting; the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building on the corner of 16th east and 9th north was burglarized by what appears to be two juveniles. They came in through the open window of Bishop Lawrence Shirks office and stole two computers. It appears that as the assailants were trying to leave the building they both dropped the monitors in the front foyer, shattering both. This is what Mrs. Braithwait heard early January 31. Evelyn even knew the exact time of the crime, “I sat up and looked at the clock, it was 1:45 a.m.”
Robert Knotz, the local building maintenance manager came by the church at around six o’clock later that morning to fix some damaged ceiling tiles. When he walked through the door there on the floor sat the two broken computer monitors. He immediately called the police. According to Mr. Shirk both computers in his office held no crucial personal information. He told reporters that the computers only held his own personal documents and letters, but nothing that could be used in identify theft.
Evelyn Braithwait has lived in the area for over fifty years, and has never seen something like this. Thinking about the break-in she commented, “I feel pretty safe here.” There are no suspects at this time.

The fire was eventually contained to the kitchen within ten minutes of the fire department coming on the scene. The other parts of the building suffered only smoke damage, and there is no word as of now if the building was up to local fire code requirements. The owner of the building, Rachel Calhoun, would not comment on the yesterday’s fire, or the state of the building. She was very apprehensive when I asked for her thoughts about yesterdays fire in her building, there is still no comment as today.
